Prospective Projects

Where I would like to take this next.

Directions

Gene expression analysis

The work I do now asks what a molecule does to a protein. The question underneath it is which genes were driving the cell in the first place, and that is a data problem as much as a biological one: high-dimensional, noisy, and easy to fool yourself with. I have done the modelling half of that before, on air quality rather than transcriptomes: twenty-four model configurations, a blind validation window, and a result honest enough to publish alongside its own failure. I would like to point the same discipline at expression data.

Rare disease genetics

Common diseases get the funding and the cohorts. Rare ones get a handful of families, an unexplained phenotype, and a variant nobody has seen before, which makes the reasoning harder and the stakes, for those families, absolute. It is the part of genetics where a single careful answer still changes a life.

Cancer biology

Less a new direction than the one I am already walking. The ROS1 work is a cancer problem approached from the chemistry side; I would like to understand the biology well enough to choose the targets myself rather than inherit them.

None of this is underway yet. The page exists so the interests are written down and dated, and so anyone whose work overlaps can see where.
